Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit (PS3) Review

DBZ: Burst Limit Review

There has been plenty of Dragon Ball Z games in the past, from Budokai to Tenkaichi; but this one could be the most fun so far. Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit was released on June 10th for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. This game hits hard, with plenty of playable characters, dozens of cut scenes, huge move sets, and destructible environments. The game spans across a couple of sagas, ranging from the Saiyan saga, to Friza saga, and to Cell saga. Additionally, there's plenty of secrets in the game too.

In the game, there are 21 playable characters, all spread across the sagas, and unlocked by completing certain objectives. The graphics are a wonderful blend of anime and 3D models, and look wonderful against the equally beautiful backgrounds. The game plays out like any normal fighter would: each character has a respective health gauge, and a ki gauge. The ki gauge allows the character to use energy attacks, like blasts, and even super attacks. Super attacks can destroy the surrounding environment, altering the playing level. A cool thing about the environments in Burst Limit too, is the ability to change locations. If a character is launched high into the air, then the fight will be carried on in the clouds. If a character is hit through some rocks, and sent flying in a different direction, the fight will continue wherever they land. Just like every other DBZ game, this one also has a counter system. It just has to be timed correctly, and it's a cinch.

Once the opponent's health is dropped to 0, the fight is over. During the course of the fight, something called "Drama Scenes" can also be unlocked. Drama scenes are obtained by meeting a certain objective during the fight. Such as, performing a certain kind of attack, having health or ki at a certain percentage, or taking/dealing a certain combo. There are plenty to unlock, leading to many hours of gameplay.

At the end of a match, a grade is given out. The highest grade possible is a 'Z'. To achieve a higher grade, certain things must be done in a battle, like defeating the opponent in less than 90 seconds. There are a number of difficulties as well, for veteran players of the fighter genre.

There are a few single player modes. Of course, there's the story mode, and then training as well. Training is used to practice moves and get the player used to the mechanics of the game. If the story mode, "Z Chronicles" gets too boring, there is also an online feature. While online, players can play anyone all over the world. It has been said though, that the farther away an opponent is, the slower the game gets.

True Dragon Ball Z fans would be sure to get this game, as it would definitely be a good game to have in the collection. Even if someone has no idea what Dragon Ball Z is(if such a person exists) they could still appreciate this game, for its wonderful anime models, tons of content, and fun action gameplay.
